Emlen Physick Estate Museum

Cape May Tourism Information

Open throughout the year, the Emlen Physick Estate is a figurehead of the town’s Historic District—and thereby a popular destination for Cape May tourism. As a building, it is characteristic of “Stick Style” architecture (from the late 19th century), and is sometimes noted as being one of the nation’s finest examples of that style.

Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is located inside. At the museum the arts, architecture and customs of the Victorian-era family who built and lived at the house are examined; through them, visitors can gain a better insight into their own past. The current exhibit and theme for the year 2012 is the clothing of the time.

The house is also the home of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC), an organization which was first formed to save the Estate from demolition. Today, MAC runs several festivals and other events near our Cape May bed and breakfast.

Tours of the Estate take approximately 45 minutes and can be completed in combination with a trolley tour of the rest of Cape May’s Historic District. Tours of the house discussing the ghosts and spirits that have been sensed by psychic medium Craig McManus are also available.

Innkeeper Tip: Try the “Combination Trolley Tour” which combines the historic district trolley tour & a tour of the Emlen Physick Estate.
