Victorian Weekend
Romantic Bed and Breakfast in Cape May
Published on September 18, 2015
It’s no secret that Cape May and its residents (myself and Anna Marie included) work hard at preserving our Victorian heritage and especially honoring this unified identity through special events. So, if you’re looking for another reason to visit Cape May this fall, add celebrating our Victorian Weekend to the list!
The weekend of October 9 – 12 this year, this event transports you back in time while allowing you to still enjoy many of today’s amenities and conveniences. For the past 43 years, the Cape May MAC’s event has enthralled visitors and locals alike with its attention to detail and unique exhibits.
A fun event for our history buffs is the Cape May Time Capsule Trolley Tour, on Sunday or on Monday, where you’ll meet figures from Cape May’s history who bring the past to life. Hear what life was like from these lively characters as you ride the trolley through town. These characters’ time isn’t free and tickets cost $22 and are limited.
Another event that brings Cape May’s history to life is the Alice Steer Wilson’s Cape May exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Listen as Wilson’s daughter, Janice Wilson Stridick, explains her mother’s artwork and devotion to Cape May.
An event that Anna Marie and I are quite fond of is the Cape May Wine School. This event, on Saturday, allows you to refine your palate and learn how to better pair wines with your favorite meals. The class is limited to 80 students so save your spot early and then come back to The Queen Victoria and we’ll discuss wines in more depth!
Another event we particularly enjoy is the Chocolate Tasting Tour! This tour combines two of our favorite things: Bed and Breakfasts and chocolate! You’ll enjoy seeing the other historic inns in Cape May while sampling a chocolate delicacy and after that return to The Queen Victoria for our afternoon tea. We might make something sans chocolate for our treat to accompany your tea.
If you haven’t soaked up enough history during the Victorian Weekend, we recommend listening to the Lessons of History: Distinguished Lecture Series on “D-Day, Why it still matters.” Listen to Colonel Cole Kingseed, Ph.D. on Sunday as he talks about the course of World War II and what could have been if our efforts had failed, as well as highlights of the heroes of D-Day. This promises to be a wonderful lecture as Colonel Kingseed has received the Army Historical Foundations’ Distinguished Writing Award for his writings on leadership by the U.S. Army in World War II. Plus, we hope you can join us for the reception afterward at The Queen Victoria with wine and tapas, and more lively conversation!
End your historical weekend with an intimate Victorian fashion show: Show Us Your Undies at the Physick Estate. You won’t have to show anything except your ticket as you see models showcase the fashions and select garments of the era. Tickets also include a delicious brunch!
We hope you can make it out for this delightful weekend of history and fun! If you need help selecting a room to play up an exceptionally historic weekend, do not hesitate to contact myself or Anna Marie at stay@queenvictoria.com for recommendations!
