Valentines Day at The Queen Victoria
|
|
Being a Romantic, I’ve always loved Valentines Day. It helps that I’ve got an amazing Valentine to celebrate it with (that would be Anna Marie, of course). In fact, we got engaged on Valentines Day, making it an eternally special day for us.
It is perfect, then, that Valentines Day is the biggest weekend of the Winter season at The Queen Victoria. It is no wonder, if you think about it. Valentines Day is a romantic day. A weekend at The Queen Victoria is a VERY romantic experience. What could be more natural than celebrating Valentines Day at The Queen Victoria?
As it happens, we still have a few rooms available for Valentines Weekend (which also happens to be President’s Day weekend). If you want to have a special Valentines celebration with your sweetie, but haven’t gotten around to planning it, now is the time. Give us a call and we’ll make sure you have a weekend to treasure forever.
As always, we’ll be presenting a beautiful long-stem rose to the ladies upon arrival to help make the weekend special (there will be a vase for it in your room and a little water tube to take it home in too).
In addition to all the normal things happening in Cape May, there are several fun special events going on in Cape May on Valentines Weekend, including:
- Cape May Wine Trail
- Chocolate Lover’s Feast
- Cape May Wine School
- Crafts & Collectibles show
- Cape May Designer Show House

Bloomsbury
Bloomsbury, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Prince Albert Hall building, has always been one of my favorite rooms. There is just something special about it, which you notice the moment you step into the room.
I’ve never quite figured out exactly what it is. It could certainly be the bright, airy, and cheery feeling in the room. With windows on three walls, you get both sunrise and sunset rays streaming into the large windows.
Bloomsbury is certainly a romantic room, with a pretty queen size 4-poster canopy iron bed (remember, Romance is the theme this month, with Valentines Day approaching).

WINE LOVERS WEEKEND February 20 – 21
Our annual Wine Blending event at Cape May Winery is definitely one of our favorite events of the year. Anybody who loves (red) wine is absolutely going to love this event. I can’t imagine a more enjoyable way to spend a chilly February afternoon than tasting & blending wines, enjoying some fine cheeses, and experiencing the company of others enjoying the same experience. It will certainly be a lifetime memory.
Seating is VERY limited now, with space left for only 5 more people. Don’t wait to call and reserve your spot!

BIRTHDAY WEEKENDS
- February 28
- March 21
- April 18
Birthdays are all about celebration. What could be better than celebrating the person you love most in life? That IS how you feel about your partner, right?!
We’re continuing our tradition of hosting a monthly birthday party this Winter for our guests who want to celebrate their birthday at their favorite B&B. We have cake. We have balloons. We sing “Happy Birthday”, at least a little bit off key. We even have little party favor gifts. In short, we have fun!
If your loved one has an upcoming birthday and you want to do something really special for them to celebrate it, it would be hard to top a trip to The Queen Victoria!

Whiskey Tasting Event March 14
Inspired by St. Patrick’s Day, and originally envisioned as an Irish Whiskey tasting event, our 3rd annual Whiskey Tasting has evolved to include any and all types of Whiskey.
This is a unique “BYOW” event (Bring Your Own Whiskey), where each participant brings a bottle of their favorite to match up against the entries of the other participants. We do a blind tasting of all submissions and spend the afternoon sipping, tasting and savoring some really great Whiskey before voting for our favorite. The winner gets bragging rights!
When was the last time you got to taste more than 10 different Whiskeys at one sitting? For someone who appreciates Whiskey, it is truly a wonderful experience.
We’ll be serving some seriously great Irish Fare again this year, so we’ll all be properly fortified for the event. Non-drinkers are welcome to enjoy the food as well. If nothing else, it is a free lunch!

The New Prince of Wales Bathroom
I’m proud to announce and share with you our latest upgrade to The Queen Victoria. This one has been a long time coming.
This new bathroom is absolutely gorgeous (way nicer looking than I can possibly capture in a photo given my abilities and camera). The tile surround for the tub is incredibly elegant, as is the glass block wall, which is bright, cheery, and interesting. I love the new tile floor too.
I know that some of you will lament the passing of our last remaining claw foot bathtub. I assure you that not only does this tub hold just as much water as the claw foot tub did, it is just as roomy and comfortable. You’re going to love it!

CAPE MAY STAGE May 20 – June 1
It looks like Cape May Stage is kicking off their 2015 Main Stage season with a comedy.
This one is totally new to me, so I’ll share what Cape May Stage is saying about it:
The unsinkable Molly Ivins, Austin’s no-holds-barred newspaper columnist and best-selling author, tells it like it is in this side-splittingly funny play. A true Texas original, Ivins was the rowdy raconteur stirring up trouble in the old boy’s club and ridiculing those she deemed too big for their britches-earning her a widely read syndicated column and a seat next to Mark Twain as one of America’s beloved satirists. Written by twin journalist sisters, Red Hot Patriot celebrates Molly’s courage and tenacity – even when a complacent America wasn’t listening – in a play that is nothing short of kick ass.

Deana Martin Concert April 4
One of the benefits of our new convention center is the amazing concerts that we are being treated to.
Last year Anna Marie and I were lucky enough to get seats at the last minute for a Deana Martin concert (Dean Martin’s daughter). Wow, what a great night out. This lady has an amazing voice and is an incredible entertainer. Anna Marie even got a chance to sing with Deana for a few moments as she draped her arm around my shoulder. Great fun!
I’ve always been a Dean Martin fan, so I was thrilled to experience Deana performing a duet with her father on one of her songs, similar to the way Natalie Cole did with her father Nat King Cole. It was very cool.
We just found out that Deana Martin is returning this April for another performance. I know that Anna Marie and I will be in attendance. I hope we’ll get to see you there!

OK, so a weekend celebration at The Queen Victoria is the Valentine’s Day gift. If you just can’t get away for the weekend, though, then the next best gift idea is most certainly a gift certificate to The Queen Victoria.
Think about it and I’m sure you’ll agree.

A beautiful Fall photo
A few months ago our guest Harry Mandel shared several amazing Cape May photos with me. I’ve shared a few with you already, but I never included this one. I’m not sure why, because looking at it now, I really love it.
I’m assuming that this was taken near Sunset Beach, or somewhere else looking across the Delaware Bay, because I can’t think of a single place in Cape May proper that has picnic tables set up like this. It looks like a pre-sunset photo, judging from the golden glow and the long shadows being cast by everything. You can also tell that it was taken in the Fall, because the Goldenrod blooms (the plant in the foreground) have already gone to seed.

Coaster Rugs
Lots of you comment about the cool beverage coasters that we feature in our guest rooms. They’re certainly different. They have the look and feel of a mouse pad, but are shaped and decorated like an Oriental rug. They even have little fringes!
We were out of these delightful items in our gift shop for quite a while, but our supplier recently came through for us and we are able to sell them again.
They come in sets of 4, each with a different pattern and color.
They would definitely make a unique, practical, and fun vacation memento to take home with you on your next visit to The Queen Victoria.
Price $19.95

Beach TagsNo, we don’t sell beach tags in our gift shop, but I thought this might be a good place to mention the availability of discounted beach tags to our faithful guests.
LOTS of you visit The Queen Victoria during beach tag season (May 22 through August 31 this year). For those of you who plan at least 4 days on the beach this summer, whether during one visit to The Queen Victoria, or more, it makes a lot of sense to purchase a discounted season beach tag. Tags went on sale December 1 and are available at the discounted price until March 31.
Discounted Price: $20 each
By the way, Cape May offers free seasonal beach tags to all Veterans and active military personnel. You must present ID in person at City Hall to obtain these tags.

Blue Pig Tavern
I just realized that we haven’t featured the Blue Pig in our newsletter in well over a year. Anna Marie and I have always enjoyed the Blue Pig. We especially like it during the winter months when the big, open fireplace is roaring with a bright, comfy blaze.
The Blue Pig has always reminded me of a Williamsburg, VA tavern, with rustic wall paneling and vintage style booth seating (not all tables are booths), mixed with elegant table linens and monogrammed plates (as pictured here). The food offerings are quite eclectic, ranging from comfort foods like “Mothers Meatloaf” and “Pulled Pork Shepard’s Pie” to “Fish & Chips (a personal favorite of mine) and Burgers, all the way to “Grilled Scottish Salmon”. One of my recent favorites at the Blue Pig has been the “Shrimp & Grits”.
If you’re searching for a fun, tasty evening out this winter, I recommend you give the Blue Pig a try. I know you’ll enjoy it.
